Dealing with rejection

Posted by BConsugar on March 5, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Early this morning (at about 2:45!) I received an email from an agent I had sent a query to a few weeks ago. I opened it to read a form rejection.

At first I was badly disappointed. After about 30 seconds or so I calmed down. Then read it again. Then I realized, "hey, at least I got a response".

I am a bit bummed - just enough to know that I still don't have a "yes", but not so disappointed that I plan to give up. I can't give up. My plan? To write more, then write some more, then sub again, then write more.

How do you deal with rejection? Have you ever received a rejection that really hit hard?

I think we've all had at least one rejection. I've had a few. I think when they start piling up, you start feeling a little dejected. Then you pick yourself up and carry on.

Keep going Bethie. Rejection will get easier.

Hi Beth!

A phrase in Harold Underdown's book : THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO CHILDREN'S PUBLISHING says to keep AT it. The reason why most do not succeed is because they simply give up. That is what has kept me going.

All my rejections hit hard but I've learned to put it away and move on. It's so frustrating though but it doesnt do you any good to dwell. The only thing that works if you want to be published... is to keep on writing and submitting and polishing up your manuscript. Giving up is not an option!

I feel like I've developed a pretty thick skin over the years, but every once in a while, one will hit extra hard. I received one last week that hit particularly hard. Two days later my daughter asked me what was wrong. "Is this still about your story?" she asked. It was. Sometimes you just can't help it. But it does pass eventually.
You're got it right, Beth. Keep on writing and keep on subbing!
