Maintaining Momentum

Posted by BConsugar on December 16, 2010 at 9:10 PM

As I prepare to complete my last assignment for the ICL course, I feel like I am losing steam. I took a couple of weeks to take it easy and not really push myself with the assignment. I am now down to less than a month until the lesson is due. I need to get myself moving. I need to submit about 8,000 words (about three chapters) to my instructor.

The only solution I have for maintaining my enthusiasm and momentum is to just do it (sorry, Nike!). I just have to write every day.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Give yourself a bonus. Buy something you absolutely love, but don't open it until you've ground out those words. As you write, the words flow easier.

The other thing you can do is, promise yourself you'll rent, or watch, that movie you've been wanting to see ONLY if you complete the words. That usually helps.

Don't you HATE it when you lose steam? Listen to music, too. That helps me, also. Nothing like inspiring lyrics to rekindle inspiration, hey?

Cat,

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I think I am down a little with all that's going on right now (hubby still looking for a job, Christmas right around the corner, etc.). I will have to make a reward for myself. I have some books that I am itching to read. Perhaos that will be my reward for finishing? Sounds like a plan. Thanks!

I'm with Cat on this one. Are you hoping to get any books for Christmas? Maybe put one away until you've finished your assignment. It would give you something to look forward to, especially being a gift. You know, you really want to read it. You'll do it.

This was the assignment I was most excited about, but I know how you feel about losing momentum. I have to revise the second half of my manuscript for my advanced novel course assignment. I've revised and revised, but my instructor didn't have many areas to work on at all, so I'm at a loss for what to revise at this point. I'm losing momentum and I have to force myself to revise yet again in order to get it in on time. I love the story and don't mind reading it for the 1,000th time, but I get frustrated when I feel like I'm just changing a word here and there. I altered a lot in the beginning.
