Sticking to a schedule

Posted by BConsugar on November 17, 2010 at 9:55 PM

As a member of the ICL Writers' Retreat, I am privileged to be able to ask questions of our guest speakers. This month the speaker is an ICL instructor, Shirley Raye Redmond. Shirley suggested that writers should have a goal for their submissions. She told us that she would send out something every Friday. She gave some reasons for it, and it makes perfect sense. So I need to set a goal. Since I am working full-time at a non-writing job, I need to make my goal challenging, but achievable. So, starting in January (since I still have one assignment left in the course), I plan to send out at least 4 submissions each month. Tough, but do-able.

Does anyone else have a goal for sending out submissions? Please share!

I submit something every Monday. It's nice having a schedule to hold yourself to. I'll send things out on other days of the week, too, if I have something, but my Monday submission is set in stone.

I never thought about having a submission schedule until Shirley mentioned it. Now that I think about it, I think it makes perfect sense. I have to give it some more thought, but finishing the course will definitely give me a little more time to write and submit.

Thanks for sharing, Kelly!

Beth: I am also a full time day jober, so I understand the the time crunch. My goal for the new year is to have one "new" submission each month. This does not include any resubmissions from previously "rejected" works. Since I am more of a novel writer than a short writer, my other goal is to complete two full novels. I have one almost completed and I have the other half way through a first draft, so both are do-able if I can just find the time. Good luck with your goals. ctny

My goal is pretty much the same as Ctny. Only difference is I am just aiming for 12 submissions in 2011. They can be resubs, but I would rather have 12 new stories. So basically a new sub a month. That is do-able.
